As a remote-first technology company, our environmental footprint differs from that of a traditional office-based organisation, but we recognise that we still have a responsibility to make thoughtful choices about energy use, travel, technology, waste and the way we work.

Our sustainability approach forms part of Xirocco's wider Environmental, Social and Governance policy and applies across our day-to-day operations.

Energy Efficiency

Xirocco encourages employees and consultants to use energy responsibly when working remotely. This includes:

Using energy-efficient devices where practical
Enabling appropriate power-saving settings
Turning off devices when they are not in use
Unplugging chargers and equipment when they are not required
Considering renewable-energy options at home where available
Using cloud services that prioritise energy-efficient data-centre operations

We also encourage employees to be aware that digital activity has an environmental cost and to avoid unnecessary consumption where practical.

Xirocco operates a remote-first working model. This can help reduce the environmental impact associated with:

We encourage virtual meetings where they are effective and appropriate, particularly where they can avoid unnecessary flights, car journeys or other travel. Avoiding avoidable email and digital clutter
Keeping digital information organised and purposeful
Removing redundant information where it is appropriate and safe to do so

The aim is not to restrict productive use of technology, but to encourage more deliberate use of digital resources.

Paperless Working

Xirocco encourages paperless working wherever practical. Employees and consultants should avoid printing unless there is a genuine business need. Where physical materials are required, we encourage:

Our remote and digital operating model allows most work to be carried out electronically.

These considerations form part of wider supplier judgement alongside security, capability, cost, reliability and commercial requirements.

Remote Working and Environmental Impact

Xirocco's remote-first model is designed primarily around flexibility, effectiveness and the nature of our work, but it also has environmental benefits.

By reducing routine commuting and allowing collaboration to take place digitally, the model can reduce some of the emissions and infrastructure demands associated with conventional office-based working.

We recognise, however, that remote working still consumes energy and technology resources, so our approach remains one of ongoing responsibility rather than assuming that remote work is environmentally neutral.

Carbon Measurement and Daily Reduction

Xirocco is committed to tracking the greenhouse-gas emissions associated with its operations, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), so that we can understand our impact and focus attention where it matters most.

Proportionate to our size and the availability of reliable data, we will establish and maintain a practical emissions baseline, record the boundaries and assumptions used, and review our position at least annually. Measurement may include business travel, energy use, remote-working and digital infrastructure, purchased equipment, cloud services and material supplier activity.

Where calculation is required, we will use current UK Government greenhouse-gas conversion factors or another recognised and appropriately documented methodology. Where precise data is not available, we will use reasonable estimates, explain their limitations and improve data quality over time rather than claim unsupported precision.

Measurement is intended to support action. We will use what we learn to identify significant sources of emissions, monitor trends and prioritise practical reductions. Carbon offsetting, if considered, will not be treated as a substitute for reducing avoidable emissions at source.

On a day-to-day basis, everyone working for or on behalf of Xirocco is encouraged to remain conscious of the emissions connected with travel, energy, equipment, digital activity and purchasing decisions. Before making those decisions, we will consider whether a practical lower-impact option is available and do what is reasonably practicable to minimise avoidable emissions while meeting legitimate business and client needs.

Continuous Improvement

Xirocco recognises that sustainability is an ongoing responsibility. We will continue to:

Review our working practices
Encourage responsible energy use
Reduce avoidable travel where appropriate
Promote longer technology lifecycles
Reduce unnecessary waste
Consider sustainability in supplier decisions
Encourage employees and consultants to contribute practical ideas
Update our policies as our business and operating environment evolve

The underlying ESG policy is reviewed regularly and at intervals of no more than three years.
